Visit to the United States Institute of Peace

This past Tuesday, the first year students from Global Scholars Program visited the United States Institute of Peace. Below is an account of the visit by Aja Finger, one of the students who attended the event.

"Tuesday, November 27, 2012 the Global Scholars visited the United States Institute of Peace for not only a very informative, but also a very thought-provoking trip. After the initial awe of the beautiful architecture passed, students were challenged to think about what really constituted peace and conflict, and whether or not they were actually mutually exclusive. Varying shades of peace and conflict were illuminated through hypothetical situations where students were encouraged to decide whether an instance was peaceful or conflicting. As typical in a Global Scholars our diverse backgrounds helped to create our different perspectives. Looking into the wells of time, we witnessed many current and past occurrences of global conflict and peace often diminished in the abundance of incidents in the news. Students also were able to watch videos of peacemakers and their work in different parts of their world. Some tears were shed, as many emotions were evoked by the moving stories. At the end we stood in front of a beautiful glass foyer, dressed in our business casual best, to finish off a picture perfect evening."
